-The BF-109 Messerscmitt-
-Summary-
The Bf-109E was the German Luftwaffes main fighter for the begining of the war for 3 years.
At that point of the war that was the dominant fighter in the skies over Europe. It was able to
outfight, outmanuver, and outrun all opposistion. On September 1,1939 Germany attacked
Poland with about 200 Bf 109s, which quickly destroyed the obsolescent Polish fighters. The
standard version of the German fighter at that time was the Bf 109E, which was still the major
variant when the Battle of Britain began in August 1940. The battle lasted several weeks and
losses on both sides were very comparable. German bombers were escorted by Bf-109s and
Bf-110's while Britain countered with the Spitfire and Hurricane.
The BF-109s range wasn't sufficient enough to make it a effective bomber escort so they
were mainlu used to defend the skies over Germany. The 109F made up most of Germany's
air defenses until the BF-109G arrived. This version was then built in huge numbers for many
varied roles. It was in a Bf 109G-14 that Major Erich Hartmann of the Luftwaffe reached his
total of 352 confirmed kills, although these were gained on the Eastern Front where German
fighters fough the outclassed early Soviet fighters. In September 1939 the Luftwaffe had a
front line strength of 1,200 fighters, including the formidable Messerschmitt Bf l09. The Bf
109G remained the major version right up to the end in May of 1945. It is thought that some
35,000 Bf 109s of all versions were produced.
